You know, this makes so much sense to me. But I think it leaves out some important disadvantages to the current system. I live in a neighborhood where there is a school right down the street. A school that we are not zoned for. Thankfully, the school we ARE zoned for is only a few miles away, but my neighbors just a few streets over are zoned for an excellent school that would take over an hour to ride to by bus. I think it's safe to say that bus would be the mode of transportation for the majority of the lower-income kids, thus adding potentially 2 hours to their day in commute alone. This in turn all but eliminates their opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities and sports. So even thought they are in a better school, they really don't get to participate. I don't know that I can get on board with that either. I am watching the debate unfold and thankfully for now it doesn't affect us (our son just turned one). But it will one day, and I want to make sure I have all the facts.
